Unwavering Faith

Have you ever received a promise from God that felt impossible or highly unlikely? Maybe it was a promise of healing, opportunity, or salvation for a family member or friend.

Abraham received a promise from God that seemed absolutely impossible, even crazy. When he was over 100 years old and his wife, Sarah, was 90, God told him that he would have a son. This promise was so unlikely that Sarah laughed when she heard the news (Genesis 18:11-15).

However, in Romans 4:13-25, Paul writes about Abraham’s unwavering faith in God demonstrated in this situation. Verse 19 of this passage says, “And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb” (NKJV). In other words, Abraham didn’t doubt or dismiss the promise of God simply because it seemed humanly impossible. Jesus said in Matthew 19:26, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

I love what Paul wrote next: “He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform.”

Though God’s promise seemed impossible, Abraham’s faith that He would keep His word was unwavering. Instead of doubting God, he glorified Him, “being fully convinced” that He was able to do what He said He would do. After all, we serve the God “who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think” (Ephesians 3:20).

Since Abraham fully believed what God promised, verse 22 says that “’it was accounted to him for righteousness.’”

Can your faith in God be defined as “unwavering”?

     No Matter What

What promises has God made you that seem impossible? Do you trust Him to keep them anyway, no matter what?

What I love about this story is that Abraham had a million reasons why he could have doubted God’s promise. Most notably, he and Sarah were well past childbearing-age! Yet, Abraham chose not to doubt and make excuses to God. Instead, he looked at all the reasons why it was impossible and glorified God in spite of them, perhaps even because of it.

Abraham remained steadfast in his faith because he knew that God never breaks His promises (see Hebrews 6:17-19). There will always be reasons in life why what God promised could never happen. Thankfully, we serve the God Who does the impossible!

Instead of grumbling and complaining about why you have not yet gotten what God has promised you, give Him praise and glory, thanking Him in advance for what you know is coming. Thank Him that He always keeps His word, no matter how impossible it seems to us.

Romans 4:23-25 says that just how Abraham was called righteous because of his faith, the same can be said for us when we believe God.

Will you take God at His word today, no matter how impossible it seems?

Let’s do it together.
