Don't Worry; Just Rest

I once read a devotional that focused on the story in Genesis when God made Eve, the first woman. The point of that devotional always stuck with me, even a few years later. Let’s walk through it in today’s article.

        The Problem

In Genesis 2, we see God creating the universe. After He created man, He said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him” (verse 18, NKJV).

There was a problem: Adam, the first man, was alone. In the next few verses, he names all the animals God created, but he still does not find a suitable companion or “a helper comparable to him.”

The Response

The Bible does not show Adam worrying or panicking about being alone. He doesn’t get stressed out trying to create his own solution or force a situation, nor does he get impatient while waiting on God to show him the solution to his problem.

I don’t know about you, but I have done all of these things before when problems arose in my life. I’m not proud of my lack of faith in God’s sovereignty, but I am human after all. It’s something we all go through but also something we must strive to improve in. Just like Adam’s problem, God has a solution to every problem we face. We just have to trust that He will give it to us at the right time.

The Solution

“And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh in its place. Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman…” (verse 21-22).

Notice what Adam was doing while God was working out the solution: he was sleeping! Resting. God gave him a deep sleep, so he wasn’t tossing and turning because of worry. Not running around, asking the lions, monkeys, parrots, and llamas to be his “helper” and trying to make those relationships work. God had already said no to them for the all-important role of being Adam’s helper and special companion. (Yes, this very much applies to dating, folks! That was not at all in my outline for this article, but that’s a very good point! 😂)

God basically said, “Hey, Adam? I see that there’s a problem here. I know what’s missing in your life. But don’t you waste a minute worrying about it because I am sovereign and omnipotent. I know the exact answer to this situation, and I’ve had it since before the problem even came up. Watch this, my beloved creation. I’m going to blow your mind and give you something better than you can imagine.”

Friends, God says this very thing to us whenever we face problems in our lives. He gives us His peace that passes all understanding and takes away our anxiety and fears. Christ extends His nail-scarred hand to you this very day and says, “Come to me all you who labour and are heavy-laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

Will you answer His call today?

Will you rest in His arms while He works everything together for your good?

            Let’s do it together.

Brilliant insight into how God knows exactly what we need and how we can grow to trust in God's wisdom and plan for us as well as try to "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." (verse 1 Peter 5:7) Also love how this post demonstrates the importance and necessity for the creation of woman!! Keep writing Olivia! 😉
