A Lifestyle of Thanksgiving

When Thanksgiving is over, the turkey is put away, and everyone has finished listing what they’re thankful for, what happens? Do we go back to the way things were like the holiday never happened?
Thanksgiving is more than a holiday; it’s a lifestyle. It’s something we should do every day, more than just “Thank You, God, for this meal.” It’s what should spill out of our hearts whenever we come before God. As it says in Psalm 100:4, “Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him and bless His name” (NKJV).
Thanksgiving is also a choice. It’s much easier to complain and focus on what we don’t have, isn’t it? Choosing to have a lifestyle of thanksgiving looks like focusing more on what God has already blessed you with rather than always complaining about what you don’t have. (I am saying this to myself just as much as I am to you all. I could certainly work on this area!)

A lifestyle of thanksgiving is an important part of a serious Christian’s walk with God. Not only does it make you happier to focus on God’s goodness in all the ways He’s blessed you, but it glorifies the Lord.
First Thessalonians 5:18 says, “In everything, give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (NKJV). It doesn’t say give thanks on one day of the year or in one season. It doesn’t say to give thanks just when you get something or when life is going well. It says to give thanks in everything.
Friends, the Thanksgiving festivities and celebrations may be over. But giving thanks to God is not something we do once and check it off on our Christian to-do list. It’s an ongoing lifestyle. An attitude. It will increase your happiness, boost your mental and emotional health, and, most importantly, glorify our Father in heaven.
Don’t let the calendar dictate how and when you are grateful. Continue giving thanks all year round.
Let’s do it together.
