A Closer Look: God’s Mercy

I recently went to see the new movie King of Kings in the theatres with my sister. Though I was not fully expecting to be so emotional, this cute animation about the life of Christ made me teary-eyed because of the simple yet beautiful portrayal of Jesus.

One scene that made me emotional was when the Pharisees brought a woman caught in the act of adultery to Jesus. Though I’ve heard this story many times, it spoke to me more vividly when watching it played out in front of me on the big screen. Let’s take a closer look at this amazing story. (You can read the whole story in John 8:3-11.)

“Then the scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. And when they had set her in the midst, they said to Him, ‘Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses, in the law, commanded us that such should be stoned. But what do You say?’ (verses three to five, NKJV).

In verse seven, Jesus replies, “’He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.’”

“Then those who heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, ‘Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?’

She said, ‘No one, Lord.’ And Jesus said to her, ‘Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.’”

What stood out to me like never before when watching this scene in King of Kings was that everyone who was about to stone her left, leaving behind the only One who was actually worthy to stone her. In fact, Jesus should have stoned her for her sin. It would have been perfectly right for Him to do so because He is a just God.

Yet, He didn’t.

He mercy not only saved her life but also gave her a second chance when He said, ‘Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.’. This is what I realized in a new way. With tears in my eyes in the darkened movie theatre, I thought, “Wow, God. Wow. You are so merciful and so good to us, even though we could never deserve it. Thank You!”

I pray that you would experience the remarkable depths of God’s mercy and love that He extends to each of us every day. Thank Him for His astounding mercies that are new each morning (see Lamentations 3:22-23).

Let’s do it together.
