What We Often Miss About Good Friday

"It was the year Good Friday fell on a Monday..." as my grandfather used to say reflectively.

I'm kidding ;) I just couldn't resist starting this Good Friday post without a tribute to one of his many jokes. Okay, on to today's post now! (LOL)

As Easter approaches, it can be easy to get caught up in the rush of the season. After all, there are church services, family dinners, Easter egg hunts, plus trying to enjoy a long weekend’s break from school and work. Yet, Easter is the most important holiday on the calendar, and it’s not because of an egg-laying bunny. (I mean, that’s not even biologically accurate! 😂)

         Slow Down

It’s easy to breeze through Good Friday when we know that Resurrection Sunday is in a couple of days, especially for those of us who are very familiar with the story. This Good Friday let’s take the time to pause and embrace what Christ did for us.

Recognize that it was our sin that nailed Jesus to that cross, and our lives that were purchased with the King’s. Our insurmountable debt that He left heaven to reconcile. His unconditional love that made Him choose us, regardless of how high the personal cost. It was our Saviour that defeated sin and death, restored fellowship between us and the Father, and forgave the very ones who humiliated and murdered Him.

He did it all for you and me.

Don’t be in such a rush to get to the incredible, victorious ending of our salvation story that you miss the whole point of it. Take the time to mourn Christ’s death before celebrating His resurrection. Pause to embrace the pain and the sorrow even while knowing that because of Christ’s resurrection, there will be a day without that pain and sorrow.

I myself have felt the urge to skip the hard parts so I can reach the joyous ending. But, the fact is that the beauty and victory of the resurrection couldn’t have happened without the injustice and despair of the cross.

Let’s Do It Together

This Good Friday, take the time to pause and embrace the reason we celebrate instead of rushing to the glorious victory of Sunday. Let the magnitude of Jesus’ sacrifice and love for you truly sink in. Without losing the hope of Sunday, let’s recognize what Good Friday means.

            Let’s do it together.
