Have you ever sat down to read your Bible but found your eyes scanning the words on the page while your mind wandered? Or yawned your way through the book of Leviticus or the begats? Maybe you’ve tried to read your Bible, but distractions, appointments, or other pressing things drag you away.
Well, friends, I’m here to help! I know what it’s like to wish you were getting more out of your devotions and time with God than a verse of the day and a quick routine prayer.
So, today, I want to share with you three ways to maximize your Bible devotions that I have personally found helpful.
1. Eliminate Distractions
At the risk of sounding like every parent, teacher, or adult, put your phone away! I doubt I need to explain how easy it is to be distracted by the onslaught of notifications or doom scrolling, even when you only meant to do one quick thing. Turn off your notifications or put your devices out of sight entirely. This time is about God.
Find a quiet space to be alone with God, whether it’s your bed (just don’t fall asleep ;), your closet, or your car. You may have to politely ask your family not to disturb you during this time (unless maybe the house is on fire or something… 😂).
I’ve also heard many people say that keeping a notepad beside you to write down things they remember to do later is a great way to not get sidetracked during your devotions.
Whatever it takes, give God your full attention. He deserves it.
2. Take Notes
I know not everyone is a note-taker, but you don’t need to take a whole page of notes every time you study the Word. (Though, it may happen if God shows you something amazing!)
“What should I take notes about?” you may ask.
Well, -- ta da! -- I made a list! 😊
• a specific verse or passage that speaks to you
• special or new things you notice about a story or passage
• a lesson you can apply to your daily life
• something you feel God is speaking to you about
Not only will taking notes allow you to look back on what God has shown you, but it will also help you remember the lessons and notes better.
3. Ask the Holy Spirit to Open Your Eyes and Heart
This is the most important point in this article.
Before you begin your devotions, ask the Holy Spirit to show you whatever it is He wants to show you through the Word. Ask Him to quiet your heart and mind and focus on this time with Him.
It will make all the difference.
Conclusion
God promises that He will draw near to us when we draw near to Him (James 4:8). I pray that each of us will take these helpful study tips and apply them to our devotions as we seek to grow closer to Jesus.
Let’s do it together.
