Being lonely can be tough. However, it isn’t necessarily a bad thing. If we have the right attitude towards loneliness, we can learn valuable lessons and become a stronger person through those seasons.
I know what it’s like to feel lonely. I’ve cried myself to sleep. I’ve been jealous of other people’s active social lives. I’ve asked God to change my situation of isolation.
But I’ve learned a valuable lesson over the past few years: being lonely doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Being alone and being lonely are two different things. Being alone is a circumstance. Being lonely is a mindset and a response.
What I want to share with you this week is why being alone or lonely isn’t always a bad thing, especially as a Christian.
When You're Alone
We will all find ourselves in a season of loneliness or isolation at some point in our lives. However, before we ask God to change our situations, it is important that we ask Him to help us grow in that season, to help you learn what He wants to teach you, and to make Him your top priority.
After all, we see people throughout the Bible who benefitted from withdrawing from the world for a time to be alone with God. Jesus often withdrew to lonely places to pray (see Luke 5:6; Mark 1:35). God spoke to Elijah when he was alone on the mountain (see 1 Kings 19). David spent years alone in the fields watching over his flock of sheep. However, he used that time to write songs of praise to God.
Never think that those seasons of being alone are wasted time. If you see them as an opportunity to withdraw from the distractions of this world to pursue God and cultivate your relationship with Him, they will never be wasted.
In Matthew 6:5, 6, Jesus says that instead of praying publicly to be seen, we should go into our room and shut the door to pray because our Father sees what is done in private and rewards us openly.
Seasons of solitude are not always bad. One evangelist said that sometimes God can do the greatest work when we are alone – when our focus is solely on Him.
So, whenever we find ourselves in seasons of loneliness or solitude, let’s use those opportunities to grow and mature in Christ so we can better glorify Him.
Let’s do it together.
